Plyometrics &
Specialty Position Training

Also known as jump training or plyos — exercises designed to develop explosive power, speed-strength, and position-specific volleyball skills.

What Are Plyometrics?

Train Explosive. Play Explosive.

Plyometrics are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed-strength). This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid or "explosive" manner — such as in specialized repeated jumping.

In what's known as the stretch-shortening cycle, concentric contractions (shortening the muscles) are followed by eccentric contractions (stretching the muscles). This provides excellent results in strengthening muscles while improving agility, stability, and balance.

These combined benefits allow your muscles to work more quickly and efficiently — translating directly to better performance on the volleyball court.

Explosive Power

Increases muscle strength so you can run faster, jump higher, and change direction quickly — all critical for volleyball.

Agility & Balance

The stretch-shortening cycle — concentric followed by eccentric contractions — strengthens muscles while improving agility, stability, and balance.

Full-Body Conditioning

Plyos tone the entire body, burn calories, and improve cardiovascular health. They also boost stamina and metabolism.

No Equipment Needed

Since they require little to no equipment, plyometric exercises can be done anytime, anywhere — making them ideal for year-round training.

Specialty Position Training (SPT)

Position-Specific Skill Development

Position training that focuses on skills to improve playing in certain volleyball specialized positions. Each position demands a unique skill set — we train them individually.

Setters volleyball position training
Setters

Setters are the quarterbacks of volleyball. SPT for setters focuses on footwork patterns, hand positioning, quick decision-making, and the explosive movement required to get to every ball on the court.

Training Focus

  • ·Footwork & court coverage
  • ·Hand setting technique
  • ·Jump setting mechanics
  • ·Reading the defense
Middles volleyball position training
Middles

Middle blockers must be the fastest players on the court, transitioning from offense to defense in a split second. SPT for middles emphasizes explosive lateral movement, vertical jump development, and blocking footwork.

Training Focus

  • ·Lateral quickness & transition
  • ·Vertical jump training
  • ·Blocking footwork & timing
  • ·Quick attack approach
Liberos volleyball position training
Liberos

The libero is the defensive anchor of the team. SPT for liberos focuses on low-body mechanics, platform control, reading hitters, and the explosive dives and rolls needed to keep the ball alive.

Training Focus

  • ·Platform passing mechanics
  • ·Low-body defensive posture
  • ·Dive & roll technique
  • ·Reading hitter tendencies

The Panther Approach

Why Plyos + SPT Together?

Plyometric training builds the physical foundation — explosive legs, fast-twitch muscle activation, and full-body power. Specialty Position Training then channels that athleticism into the precise, repeatable movements each position demands.

A setter with explosive footwork gets to every ball. A middle with a trained vertical jump wins at the net. A libero with conditioned low-body mechanics digs balls others can't reach. The combination is what separates good players from great ones.

At Panther VBC, we integrate both into our training philosophy because we believe every athlete deserves to develop their full potential — on the court and beyond.
